Prism Photography - Using Prisms for Creative Photography Effects
I tried a new thing and it was amazing!!!! Ok, but let me give you a little bit of a back story before I start chatting about the new thing I tried.
For me I absolutely love creating photos in camera. Yes we all can create some amazing photos in Lightroom and Photoshop during our post processing, but I find it magical to be able to create an image in your camera rather than making it in Photoshop. I think I love it so much because it is just a different way to create. It takes me back to the film days where if you wanted a certain image your only option was to create it in camera. It requires alot of thought, some creativeness, some planning, and alot of trial and error.
One way I do this is by shooting through things. You all know I love shooting through things. It seriously adds such an amazing effect to photos. You can shoot through leaves, plastic bags, ferns, flowers, doors, windows…. Seriously there are so many options. These kinds of photos really add depth to your image and also add that artistic effect. Your clients will love them and they can cost you absolutely no money. Just pick up a leaf from off the ground :)
Here are some examples of what I am talking about:
Prism Photography
Well, since I love shooting through things I have always had my eye on cool glass photography prisms but I just never bought one. I seriously don’t know why I didn’t buy one sooner because they are super inexpensive.
So, I wanted to show you how cool shooting with a prism can actually be! I also wanted to show you some photos with the prism and some photos without a prism. That way you can decide if it is something that you want to try out before you spend the money on it :)
The image to the left is the prism that I purchased. You can find it here.
During my last senior portrait session I tried out the prism and let me tell you I am freaking OBSESSED! Like so beyond obsessed it’s not even funny. I had to contain myself not to use the prism the entire time. It creates such a cool effect in camera.
Here is a photo with and without the Prism.
The first two images have a prism and the last one is without a prism.
Here is another location. The first three images have a prism and the last one is without a prism:
What do you think? Have you used a prism? Comment below and let me know.
Here are some other prisms that would be awesome to try out. I seriously want the Fractal filter set! I think that one would be amazing and would provide so many options!
